Synopsis

Delvina Salvastano Kline has spent her life balancing two identities: the privileged world of high society and the shadow of her birth father’s crime empire. Determined to forge her own path, she becomes a private investigator, stepping away from the expectations of wealth and status. But when a rising fashion model is found dead, Delvina is thrust into a high-stakes murder case—one that forces her to partner with detective Kent Brisbane, the man she once loved and lost.
As they navigate glittering parties and dark alleyways, they uncover a web of secrets more dangerous than they imagined. But solving the mystery isn’t the only challenge—Kent knows a truth about Delvina’s past that could shatter everything she’s built. With danger closing in, will they be able to uncover the killer before it’s too late? And can their hearts find a second chance amidst the chaos?

My Thoughts/Review

This book completely swept me away! The Dreams We Knew is easily one of my favorite reads of the year so far. Rachel Scott McDaniel masterfully balances romance, mystery, and historical detail, making this a truly immersive experience. Here’s what I loved most:

The Historical Setting

The 1920s New York backdrop was richly detailed, from the glamorous high society parties to the city’s grittier underbelly. I even learned new things about the era that sent me down a research rabbit hole which is always a sign of great historical fiction!

The Second-Chance Romance

Delvina and Kent’s relationship was everything I wanted. It was swoony, heartfelt, and full of flirty banter. Kent is the perfect gentleman, completely devoted to Delvina, and willing to fight for their love.

I’ll give up anything to have you.
Multiple Mysteries

Not only was the murder investigation compelling, but the mysteries surrounding Delvina and Kent’s past kept me intrigued. Instead of one big reveal at the end, the story gave just enough pieces along the way to keep me guessing.

The Emotional Depth

While the book had plenty of suspense and romance, it also explored deeper themes of identity, redemption, and love overcoming obstacles. The emotional moments were just as gripping as the action-packed ones.

This heart no longer beats for me, but for you.
