January Reading: Cozy Books, Fresh Starts & New Favorites

January is finally over! It always feels like the longest month to me, but I’m learning to savor it by embracing the feeling of extra time, a rare gift in the rush of everyday life. This year, my January reading reflected that slower pace as I enjoyed a few wonderful books, settled into a new rhythm, and welcomed a sweet puppy into our home!

Now that February is here, I can’t help but start dreaming of spring. A fresh season, a new rhythm, time in the garden, and all the incredible books I want to read. There are so many wonderful releases coming this year, and I have my eye on quite a few! Especially the historical fiction—this might just be my year of historical fiction!

Before I get too carried away with what’s ahead, let’s take a look back at the books I read in January.

Still Life by Louise Penny

Synopsis: Still Life is the first book in the beloved Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series. When a well-loved artist is found dead in the idyllic village of Three Pines, Gamache is called in to unravel a mystery that feels anything but simple. As he investigates, secrets begin to surface, and the charming small town reveals a much darker undercurrent.

My Thoughts:
This book was the perfect cozy mystery to start the year with! Louise Penny’s writing is beautiful, and the way she weaves together mystery and atmosphere is truly something special. I adored the town of Three Pines—it’s the kind of place you wish you could visit, filled with quirky, lovable characters. Gamache himself is such a refreshing detective—kind, intelligent, and deeply intuitive. The mystery kept me guessing the entire time, which I love. I can’t wait to continue this series! When the Day Comes by Gabrielle Meyer

Synopsis: Libby, the main character, is born with a rare and magical ability—she lives in two timelines, 1774 Colonial Williamsburg and 1914 Gilded Age New York. On her 21st birthday, she must choose which life to continue, leaving the other behind forever. With war, love, and family expectations weighing heavily on both sides, her choice is anything but simple.

My Thoughts:
This is easily one of the most unique historical fiction novels I’ve ever read. The concept of living in two timelines was fascinating, and Gabrielle Meyer wove the historical details seamlessly into the story. The history in this book was rich and there were so many vivid details brought each era to life. The characters were wonderful, and the emotional weight of Libby’s choice had me completely invested (and yes, I cried!). It was thought-provoking and beautifully written. Definitely one of my favorites this month! It would make an excellent book club pick! You can read my full review here.

After Life by Gayle Forman

Synopsis: A contemporary novel that delves into grief, second chances, and the unexpected ways life—and afterlife—can surprise us. When the protagonist finds herself in a mysterious afterlife, she must come to terms with the past while navigating an unknown future.

My Thoughts:
If you love emotional, thought-provoking stories, After Life is a must-read. Gayle Forman has such a way of capturing raw emotions, and this book completely hooked me. It was heartfelt and contemplative, lingering in my mind long after I finished. I received this free copy from Booksparks as part of their Winter Reading Challenge.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Synopsis: The classic enemies-to-lovers story that needs no introduction! Pride and Prejudice follows the witty and independent Elizabeth Bennet as she navigates family expectations, societal pressures, and her reluctant attraction to the proud (yet swoon-worthy) Mr. Darcy.

My Thoughts:
I’ll never get tired of this book! This time, I listened to the Audible Jane Austen Collection version which was suggested to me by my friend Meg, host of the podcast Meg’s Reading Room (If you haven’t listened, you should!) This audiobook version is narrated by Claire Foy, who I absolutely loved in The Crown. Her narration was phenomenal. Her voice was perfect for Austen’s prose. Plus, this was a full-cast production, which made it feel like a stage play. It was such an immersive experience, like stepping right into the story. Pride and Prejudice will forever be my favorite book—the one that made me fall in love with reading.
