Synopsis
Sloane Caraway is a liar—but only about the small things, or so she tells herself. When she sees a little girl crying in the park, she lies about being a nurse just to help. That lie sets off a chain of events that lands her a nanny position for the perfect couple, Jay and Violet Lockhart. But perfection is only surface deep. As Sloane settles into their picture-perfect New York life, she begins to suspect she’s not the only one spinning stories.
Secrets pile up, lies multiply, and danger creeps closer. Count My Lies explores the twisted prison our falsehoods create, and what happens when you can no longer separate truth from fiction.
My Thoughts/Review
I read this book in 48 hours which is something I haven’t done in a long time. That alone tells you how binge-worthy it is. From page one, I was hooked. It had that rare pacing that gives you just enough answers to satisfy your curiosity, but every reveal introduces new questions, where the mystery only deepens the more you know.
Sloane isn’t your typical heroine. She’s impulsive, deceptive, and not particularly likable, but somehow, I still wanted her to find peace. And she’s not the only morally gray character in this story. No one comes out clean, and that’s what made this such a delicious read.
The thing about lies is that they add up, form their own truth and a twisted prison of a world.
I especially loved the psychological dive into compulsive lying. Seeing how Sloane rationalized and stacked her fabrications was fascinating and also a little unsettling. Add in the unreliable narrator element, and you have the perfect cocktail for a twisty thriller.
The only reason this wasn’t a full 5-star read for me was that a few twists leaned toward the implausible side. Still, I loved the journey and how neatly everything wrapped up at the end. If you’re the kind of reader who needs closure, this book delivers.
