A Beguiled Gentleman by Audra Wells: Book Review

There are few things better than discovering a new favorite in a favorite author’s catalog, and that’s exactly how I felt after finishing A Beguiled Gentleman by Audra Wells. I’ve loved her Improper Agreements series for its wit, warmth, and wonderful writing, but A Beguiled Gentleman, the first in her new series, just might be her best book yet. This story blends the emotional depth of a coming-into-your-own journey with the slow-burn tension of a beautifully built friends-to-lovers romance. It’s soft, thoughtful, and so satisfyingly romantic.

Synopsis of A Beguiled Gentleman

When Hannah and Noah strike up a quiet friendship, neither expects it to become the emotional anchor they both need. Hannah is navigating the pressure of societal expectations and a controlling mother, while Noah is trying to figure out what it means to truly love and be loved. As they find comfort and laughter in each other’s presence, their connection begins to deepen into something more. But both have wounds to heal, and the journey from safety to vulnerability isn’t always smooth.

My Thoughts

Audra Wells has long been a favorite of mine, but A Beguiled Gentleman might be the moment she outdid herself. This book is tender, thoughtful, and so emotionally satisfying. It has all the charm I expect from her stories, but there’s also a quiet depth and vulnerability that really stood out to me here.

I loved how Hannah and Noah began as something simple—just two people trying to be there for each other—and how that slowly, naturally shifted into something deeper. Their relationship builds with such care, and that makes every romantic moment feel earned and intimate. If you’re drawn to love stories where emotional connection comes first, this is one of the best examples I’ve read in a while.

One thing I especially appreciated was the character growth on both sides. Hannah’s journey of learning to take up space and stop molding herself to meet others’ expectations felt incredibly grounded and real. And Noah ended up being such a rewarding character to follow. His transformation is gradual, but it’s sincere and the payoff is beautiful.

There’s also a perfect amount of emotional tension and drama to keep you invested, and even when things got a little angsty, it never felt overdone. The ending ties everything together in such a satisfying way, and the epilogue left me with a full heart.

If you love friends-to-more romances, or even if you usually don’t, this one is worth picking up. It’s sweet, layered, and quietly powerful in all the best ways.

Highlights

A Beguiled Gentleman is Audra Wells at her absolute best. It’s heartfelt and romantic, full of tenderness, longing, and that quietly powerful kind of love that sneaks up on you. Whether you’re already a fan of hers or new to her work, this book is one you won’t want to miss. It’s the kind of Regency romance that feels timeless, not just for the setting, but for the emotional journey it takes you on. I absolutely recommend this one.
